All Five Happy Campers on top of Coney Mountain

Planning a trip to the Adirondacks and looking for a good hike to do with kids that offers a fantastic view? If so, Coney Mountain Trail in Tupper Lake should be near the top of your list. The Coney Mountain trail is an out and back trail, 2.2 miles round trip, that takes you to the summit of Coney Mountain, 2265′ in elevation. The summit offers a 360 degree view! You can see the surrounding area including Tupper Lake, Goodman Mountain, Mount Morris and the Horseshoe Lake Wild Forest.

The trail is a steady incline over easy to moderate terrain from the start. Although it does get slightly steeper near the summit. The last section is over slab rock but the kids managed this just fine. It took us a little less than an hour to reach the summit and much less time to make it back down to the car. Our kids hike quite a bit but we passed other families, some with very small kids and they all seemed to be handling the hike well.

We were able to take pictures, rest for a bit and soak in the view. The summit is large so it won’t feel crowded even with other hikers up there. The breeze felt great! We probably stayed at the summit for close to 45 minutes. I always recommend a backpack with water and snacks, especially when hiking with younger kids. We did this hike right after we went to the Wild Center in Tupper Lake. Many people there said this was probably the best hike in the area.

I probably said, “Wow! It’s so beautiful up here!” at least 20 times! 🙂

The trailhead is located along Route 30 heading towards Long Lake. It’s about 12 miles from the intersection of Route 3 and Route 30 in the Village of Tupper Lake. It will be on the left side of the road and have a state DEC sign to mark the location.

Unfortunately my pictures don’t do this hike justice. You need to experience it for yourself!

Helpful Tip

  • While the McDonald’s in Tupper Lake is quite tasty, don’t have that for lunch before hiking the trail. You’ll quickly regret it. Haha! We’re usually better planners than that.

Caroline

I live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with my husband and three daughters. I don't want to miss a single opportunity to be outdoors and exploring with my family. While I love to travel, my favorite trips involve long car rides (crazy, I know), hiking, canoeing and camping. Looking back through pictures and retelling stories from our crazy adventures makes me the happiest.
